Google directory (aka dmoz, aka ODP) blows. The site submission has been down forever and it's not clear when it will be up again. Thank you, Google, for lousy service.

It's not Google that owns or operates the directory. They just use the data from the Open Directory Project http://www.dmoz.org which is an AOL run web directory, edited by volunteers. Submissions are currently down at dmoz, but they are making progress with the problem as editors can now log into their accounts. So Google has nothing to do with the problems of the directory, other than using the data from dmoz.
